I love to go hiking in Nags Head Woods. This painting is from a photograph taken there. Coming up the trail near these trees I always see a deer so I considered calling it "Deer Jump" but everyone would be looking for the deer, as I usually am through my camera viewfinder, only to find it has jumped into the gulley just beyond these holly trees. They are especially pretty in the spring in the bright sun and fresh greenery of the trees surrounding them. I gave this painting a circle effect with the branches -- the circle of life (Alternate title no. 3). This painting has a cherry americana frame and I used econospacers around the glass so there is no mat. I love this framing technique for pastels. It really gives a quality presentation. Nags Head Woods Nature Conservancy Preserve is a unique place on the Outer Banks where northern trees meet southern trees in a typical coastal maritime forest. It is a beautiful place of rolling dunes called ridges and swales which are like little ponds and abounds in wildlife. I like to hike there in the wintertime when the bugs are sleeping. I like to meditate and observe nature in a little woods near my home on the Outer Banks of NC. We have these live oaks who bend over in the Northeast wind and get shaped that way permanently. And also near the trees is this wreck of a car and it is quietly rusting away, into obscurity, back to nature. I wanted to paint the trees and the car was a friend of the trees. I'm not a friend of the car, but hey, any friend of the trees is a friend of mine! So I painted both. One of the prominent features of the resort were a number of houses that were built out in the water on the Soundside, hence the name of the town. This guy showed up in a random driveby shooting I often do in the summer. I point my camera out the window and click away. I don't know what I will find until I download them into my computer. I changed the scenery and added the dog and piled on a few more items in his cart.

The Buckskin Gelding

Growing up on a farm means spending a lot of time caring for animals. They like to eat most days and there were a lot of them to tend. As a treat, or in recognition of all our hard work, sometimes our father would give us our very own animals to care for and tend.

One year my father brought home a buckskin stallion for my brother. He had fine lines and was a wonderful example of the buckskin breed. My brother named him "Muggs". He would look into the horse's face and say, "...look at that mug". I think the name may have originated from a character in a Dick Tracy Comic Book.

One weekend the four of them, my father, my brother, Muggs and the bay mare that my father rode went on a trail ride in the hills around Crandall. Muggs was completely unmanageable around the mares and way too much horse for my older brother. I believe Muggs's fate was sealed the moment he tried to mount Bennie Carlson's mare while Bennie was still in the saddle. The following day my father gelded Muggs. I remember my brother being quite upset about the incident and I guess Muggs was less than pleased. My brother and for sure Mugg's life may have changed that day. I remember riding Muggs more than I can remember my brother riding the buckskin. I think my brother had discovered girls and muscle cars. I could catch Muggs in the middle of the pasture and take a shoe lace out of my tennis shoe and ride him until it was time to again feed the animals.

I found this buckskin on a backstreet in Wanchese.
